No place for trash

Ecological fairy tale

Once there was the Garbage. It was ugly and angry. Everybody talked about him. A garbage appeared in the city because the people started throwing away cardboard boxes, paper, plastic and glass bottles, can and tins, plastic containers and packages,  food waste. Some people threw candy wrappers everywhere. The garbage was very proud of the fact that his possessions were everywhere: in every home and every yard.  The Garbage enjoyed it. Then the garbage became big and strong.

Near the city there lived a Wizard. He loved the clean city. One day he looked at the city, and was very upset. There were candy wrappers, paper, plastic cups everywhere.

The Wizard called his assistants: the Cleanliness, the Neatness, the Order. And he said , " You see what the people have done. Let's clean up this town!" They took brooms, scoops, rakes and began to remove all the garbage from the streets. They worked and sang a song:

Hey, this world’s a dying planet
Nothing matters, nothing’s won
I have come to seek revenge
For all that you have done...
The Garbage saw that Cleanliness was going around the city. It said, " Hey, Trash, hold on - better do not fight with us!»

The garbage was terrified. It cried out: "Oh, don't touch me! Where  can  I go?" The Neatness, the Cleanliness and the Order  looked at him as stricktly as he started to run away from the town saying: "Well, I'll find myself a shelter, and I`ll be back".

Finally, the city was clean. The Cleanliness and the Accuracy wanted to recycle all the garbage. The Cleanliness said, " This paper is not a garbage.  People can make new notebooks and textbooks out of it," and placed old newspapers, magazines, cardboard in a container for paper.

The Order added: "We can give food waste to animals and birds and feed them. The rest of the food waste will be taken to food waste containers. And glass, empty jars and glassware will be placed in a container for glass".

Then the Order continues: "Plastic cups and bottles won't be thrown away. Plastic will be new toys for the kids."

So our wizard and his assistants brought order to the city, taught people to protect natural resources and explained, that to maintain cleanliness is enough not to throw litter.

The first part of the story

Mrs. Smith lived in a big house on the bank of a river. She  was  an old woman and lived alone. Sometimes she walked on the bank of the river and remembered about the live in the past. There were much fish in clean water of the river, children swimming there, people taking water for their needs in this  full- flowing river. Now she can see much rubbish on the bank of the shallow river. The water is polluted and children have to swim there. Nobody want to drink water. The number of fish slowed down.

Mrs. Smith didn`t like the rubbish on the bank of the river.” There is nothing to see here. Nothing but rubbish: plastic  and glass bottles, cans, tins, cartoons, cardboards, plastic containers,- she thought. One day, Mrs. Smith cleaned some rubbish on the bank of the river opposite her house and took it away. She cleaned up some rubbish for half an hour and so. She cleaned up the rubbish the next day too. And the next. And the next.

Soon a part of the bank looked like e new place, neat and clean, with no rubbish anywhere. Instead  of rubbish there was green grass and some flowers- red and yellow and blue. What a difference Mrs. Smith made in a half an hour and so.

Second  part of the story

The bank of the river

Once she walked on the bank of the river and  was very upset. It was badly polluted  by fishers. Some fisher threw empty plastic bottles,  different bits of wood, plastic packets  away. Children threw empty crisp packets  and sweet forfeits everywhere. Somebody threw empty paint containers  on the river bank. Somebody threw the rubbish in the river. The pollution could kill lots of fish and baby ducks. There were colorful bits of glass on the ground. She was in great despair. She got a headache and went home.

Suddenly she heard loud noise. She looked through the window and saw students of the village school. They were with their teachers. But what were they doing? Some students were holding big bags. Some students began to clean up the rubbish on  the bank of the river. They put empty crisp packets, sweet forfeits, paint containers, plastic bottles, metal cans and tins, empty cardboards, bits of wood and wire in big bags. They loaded the rubbish on a big lorry. Soon a part of the bank looked like a new place, neat and clean, with no rubbish anywhere.

Mrs. Smith wanted to join them and hurried up to the students. They worked together with great enthusiasm and were happy. How nice was the bank of the river now! One of the teachers took some photos of Mrs. Smith and students working  together. Mrs. Smith told them  about the live in the past:  about a lot of fish in the clean water of the river, children swimming there, people taking water for their needs in this  full - flowing river. One of the teachers told her about the environmental project  “The bank of the river”. The idea was to clean up the banks of the river. “ It is a great idea”- said Mrs. Smith with a smile.

Third  part of the story

Posters

In two days Mrs. Smith went shopping. There is a notice board  in front of the shop.  There were some colorful posters on it. She stopped and began to read them.  Students  wrote this posters and drew pictures about the problem of protecting the nature. There some of them:

1.Always put rubbish in a bin.

2.Don`t throw rubbish in water.

3.Never paint or draw on the trees.

4.Never cut down baby trees.

5.Don`t hurt animals.

6.Feed birds in winter.

7.Plant flowers and trees.

8.Leave the place clean.

9.Help to have all water clean.

10.Do not damage the banks of the river.

11.Do not take flowers and plants.

12.Protect wildlife, plants and trees.

After shopping Mrs. Smith decided to visit students. They were discussing their plans how to help nature. She suggested to do signs and hang them near the roads to the forest and to the river.

People could read them and would follow their advices. The students agreed with her suggestion.

Fourth part of the story

3 R-s

Next day Mrs Smith decided to visit students again. They  have made a school magazine about the nature pollution. She has read this magazine and has found out many interesting facts about the rubbish. For example:

1. If we throw away glass it will disappear in 1000 years.

2. If we throw away aluminum cans and plastic bottles they will  disappear in 500 years.

3. If we throw away nespapers they will disappear in 2-3 months.

4. If we throw away cardboard it will disappear in 3 months.

5. If we throw away paper it will disappear in 2 years.

6. If we throw away metal tins and other metal things they will disappear in 100 years.

7. If we throw away batteries and rubber tires they will disappear in 100 years.

Mrs Smith thought what people could do with that problem. Students discussed that problem with their teachers. They didn`t like how the recycling was organised in their village. They wanted to collect paper, cans, plastic bottles, cartons and glass bottles to recycle. But there weren`t bins for it. It must be organised properly. Some students reused cans, bottles and paper and made different handmade things for their homes and gardens. Some students refused to buy food in plastic bags and packiging. They would reduce using of electricity, water and paper. They have understood that the problems were important.

In the evening Mrs Smith walked along the river and saw some fishers there. She came up to them and told them about environmental problems:

"If we pollute the air we will change the climate. If we throw away bottles we will damage the nature. If we leave rubbish in forests we will hurt animals. If we don`t recycle the paper we will cut down the trees to make new paper. If we break the trees we will disturb the birds. If we throw the rubbish into the river we will cause water pollution. If we leave glass bottles in the forests we will hurt animals and people".

The fishers promised her to take the rubbish away.
